Review: The Rum and Crab Shack (St Ives)

As a non-drinker who makes friends with crabs rather than eating them, The Rum and Crab Shack might seem like an odd choice. But it has a lot going for it. It’s up a flight of stairs so it’s fairly quiet, they let dogs hang out in the bar area and they have a selection of great vegan options.

I was tempted by the tofish and chips and then I was tempted by the crab cakes and then the jambalaya. Sometimes I get so used to only having one thing that I can eat that I’m paralysed by indecision. Eventually I settled on the Dirty Rice. I was kind of disappointed when I first saw it. It looks like a small portion, a tin of rice with the guac heaped on top. But then I started eating.

It had all of the flavour. Earthy, delicious and packed with unexpected texture. The pistachios were the perfect touch. And it turns out that that is a deceptively large amount of food. I was happy with my choice but I feel sad that we live so far from St Ives. There are still those other three vegan options…
